Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2006
The Hong Kong Marathon is an annual event organized by the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association and this year's event was held on Sunday,
12 February 2006. This year also marked the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong Marathon and almost 40,000 runners from Hong Kong and overseas participated in the event. Following last year's success, the Hong Kong Marathon is again the final leg of the "Greatest Race on Earth", with three other different races held in Nairobi, Singapore and Mumbai. In recognition of its international significance, Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2006 was awarded the "M" Mark status without funding support by the Major Sports Events Committee under the Sports Commission.
On top of the full Marathon race at 42.195 km, there were also the Half-Marathon at 21.0975 km and the popular 10 km race. Despite the distance differences, all races started from Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui and finished at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wanchai, with longer races covering more areas of course. Kenyan runner Simon Bor and Ethiopian runner Dire Tune won the overall championship of the Men's and Women's Marathon respectively, while Kenyan runner Meshack Kosgei Kirwa won the Individual Challenge championship of the "Greatest Race on Earth".
